The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established and approved by the United Nations Organisation (UN) for the 2015-2030 period, are a universal call to action to “end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity”. These goals build on a similar previous initiative called the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), while placing greater emphasis on environmental sustainability. At Viesgo, with the value of Responsibility in mind, we have included the Sustainable Development Goals in our business strategy, particularly those directly related to our activities.
The good health and well-being of the different groups related to Viesgo, both internally and externally, is one of the strategic priorities of our company. Promoting healthcare in company employees and the permanent work involving awareness to prevent any type of occupational accident form the cornerstone of our industrial activity. Alongside this, we organise and participate in events and activities to promote well-being through sport.
Viesgo remains firmly committed to equal opportunities between the men and women in its workforce. We promote the work-life balance of our employees through policies that enable them to progress satisfactorily, with equal opportunities, professional development and the enjoyment of their private lives ever present.
This is Goal 7, but for Viesgo it is one of its main goals, as it affects our two main lines of business: electricity distribution and generation. Supporting efficient, sustainable and renewable generation produced in an environment-friendly manner, and the distribution of energy focusing all our efforts on grid modernisation and automation are the main lines of action in response to this UN goal.
Investments in infrastructures and innovation are the basic driving forces of economic growth. Viesgo plans to invest almost 450 million euros in the next five years throughout its distribution network. We invest over 1.5 million euros every year to R&D+i in order to become a benchmark in the sector and foster competitiveness.
The fight against climate change is one of the main challenges faced by mankind. Along these lines, the energy sector plays a fundamental role in reaching the goals set by the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit global warming to below 2ºC. Viesgo remains firmly committed to decarbonisation and plays an active role in developing environmental policies that help fight greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
We collaborate indirectly with the remaining SDGs through agreements signed with different institutions to contribute to the social and economic development of the communities in which we operate.
